How to Create a Vintage Farmhouse Living Room

Designing a vintage farmhouse living room without too much white was a bit of a challenge. Because this is more of a “curl up and watch a movie” room to our family, we decided to use this opportunity to try out dark walls and we chose a lovely navy paint color for this space. I’m loving the concept of a darker, more masculine space as a contrast to some of our brighter rooms. I think it’ll work since we have the same vintage inspired style throughout (because this is an old farmhouse after all!)

Vintage Inspired Gallery Wall

I may have spent the past year stocking up on antique frames, vintage paintings, and beautiful prints to hang in our living room… I love the idea of a gallery around the TV. Giant TVs can just look out of place in old houses, but arranging it within a gallery helps it blend in better especially if the wall behind it is dark.

I have a few antique paintings and signs, but those can get pricey so my other gallery pieces include vintage map prints (like this one of South Carolina where my husband and I got married), vintage etchings, classic painting reproduction prints (I LOVE the gorgeous light and colors of antique artwork!), old book plates, and of course a dash of something modern like the a beautiful bison print.

    1. Thanks, Sarah! I think the gallery wall is what I’m most excited about because I’ve been collecting artwork for the past year or so! Can’t wait to get it all up :)

  1. It sounds like plans for a one-of-a-kind room. And yes, I’m head over heels for that console too. Can’t wait to see what the dark walls look like.

  2. Meg, I love it! I love the idea od using something different and old for a coffee table! We are currently on a similar hunt. I can’t wait to see what you do here :-)

  3. this looks so great! I just found your blog from pinterest – but we have very similar styles :) My family and I have been looking for an old farmhouse to fix up for over a year! We are in a rural area too – but country properties are SO hard to find here and get snatched up super quick. Anyway – just wanted to say hi. I love your mood board and your blog is gorgeous!

    1. Thank you, Christy! I love your blog & I’m excited to follow you now!

Good luck on your farmhouse search! We looked for almost a year and it was SO frustrating. We ended up getting our house because we toured it and made an offer the second day it was on the market. And it still wasn’t the only offer. You’re right, they get snatched so quickly! I checked Trulia and Zillow just about every day. It was nice because you can search by county name if you don’t want to be confined to a specific town. Good luck!!

  4. This is a great set of plans for your farmhouse living room. The gallery wall will fill up the space and the console will add a unique element to the room. Looking forward to seeing it. I am cohosting a new link party and would love it if you could join us at Sweet Inspiration.

  15. You might want to look into World Market. I just bought a similar style console for super cheap. It is extra long and is the same color as your inspiration piece. It is even better in person. It was on sale and then they had an additional 20% off. I ended up getting it deleivered for less than $500!
